Long Term Monitoring

Butterflies

Butterflies are monitored around the grounds of the Medina Valley Centre throughout the year and a transect walk has carried out between April and September since 1988.  The grounds are divided into 10 areas and species are recorded from each one, as shown below.

We are now 19 weeks into the 2007 recording season

An unusual siting on 8th August was a Small Heath.

The warm weather in April meant a lot of butterflies were on the wing quite early on, but since the wet May there have been very few. Meadow Browns were first observed on the wing on 5th June and Marbled Whites on 22nd June. Red Admirals, Small Tortoiseshells and Small Coppers are also being regularly observed.

The first Gatekeepers were observed on 27th June (week 13 of the survey).

Also observed on 8th June was a large number of Peacock caterpillars on Nettles at Medina Valley Centre.

The data we collect is shared with Butterfly Conservation and the United Kingdom Butterfly Monitoring Scheme.
