Our Staff

Keith Marston – Manager of Field Studies
BA (Hons), PGCE, British Orienteering Coach

Keith joined the staff in 1986 with the responsibility of developing and teaching the geography fieldwork at MVC and was appointed Head of Environmental Studies in October 2006. He has co-led the geology section of the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. As an experienced ornithologist, Keith has been contracted to carry out bird survey work on the Island and published several major reports on the birds of the Medina Valley.

Helen Parry – Key Stage 2 and 3 Co-ordinator & Education Officer for Eco-Challenger Project
BSc (Hons) MSc PGCE, British Orienteering Coach

Helen joined the staff in 1999 having completed her MSc in Environmental and Development Education in 1999 after working for some time for an educational charity in Bulgaria. She has recently edited a document on Action Research in Outdoor Education with other members of the National Association of Field Study Officers.


Dr Roger Herbert – Field Studies Tutor
BSc (Hons) PhD PGCE CBiol MIBiol, BCU Level 2 Canoe Coach

Roger led the teaching and development of Field Studies since joining the staff in 1982 until 2006. He is part-time at the Centre and a Senior Lecturer in Marine & Coastal Biology in the School of Conservation Sciences at Bournemouth University. He is marine recorder for the Isle of Wight Natural History & Archaeological Society and organises Marine Survey weeks for undergraduates and postgraduates. He has written many papers and has
a particular interest in barnacles and other species which
can be used as indicators of climate change.


Steve Taverner – Field Studies Tutor
MA MSc PGCE, British Orienteering Tutor/Assessor, BCU Canoe Coach

Steve has taught biology and geography courses at the Medina Valley Centre since 2003 and now leads the AS & A2 Environmental Studies course the Centre provides for local schools. Previously Steve has taught in a number of Island schools and at the Isle of Wight College.




Rachel Luxton - Field Studies Tutor
BSc Marine Biology, PGCE Secondary Science

Rachel joined the staff team in April 2010 and co-ordinates the biology and science courses. She has taught secondary science in schools in Kent and Uganda, and has been actively involved with the Kent Wildlife Trust. She keeps herself fit by cycling, running, rock climbing and mountain walking!
