Field Study Courses

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 and Common Entrance Exam

Outdoor education and field studies should form a crucial part of Key Stage 3 work. Taking Key Stage 3 pupils away for a residential visit is very rewarding as the concepts they have learnt in class are brought alive and consolidated outdoors.

The Isle of Wight is an ideal venue for field study courses as fieldwork can be carried out in a variety of easily accessible localities and habitats. Courses can be solely Key Stage 3 Geography or Key Stage 3 Science, or can be a combination of both subjects.

Many students also take the Common Entrance Exam and a field study course is a good opportunity to progress the students learning in preparation for the Common Entrance Exam. Valuable fieldwork and data collection outside the classroom can also be carried out which students can use for their individual fieldwork enquiry assessment. Pre-Common Entrance Exam field study courses have been successfully run at Medina Valley Centre for a number of years and the programme is usually a combination of science and geography outdoor education activities.

Another recommended option is to do something a bit different and develop the group dynamics by combining a biology or geography field course with an outdoor adventure activity such as sailing, canoeing, raft building or orienteering.
