Recent Past Weather

We collate data from our weather station at the end of every year and summarise our results in the meteorological report. Analysing data from the recent past is important to illustrate how the Island climate has changed in recent years and therefore start to think about what will happen in the near future.

The recent historical data is based on daily records from the Medina Valley Centre weather station.  The sunshine and wind records were supplemented with records from Shide, Newport, Isle of Wight, taken by Mr. Denis Simmons, until April 2010.

Newport 2000 - 2010

This graph for Temperature shows that over the last 10 years there has not been a clear change in the annual temperatures, but the winter of 2010 shows up as being exceptionally cold.

This graph for sunshine hours shows that annually sunshine hours in Newport have decreased over the last 10 years, but the decrease has been greater in the summer than the winter.

The trend lines for these rainfall graphs suggest that annually the rainfall has decreased.  However, there is a wide variation around the trends, and since the low in 2005 rainfall has been a general increase in winter rainfall amounts.
