The surviving areas of ancient woodland in Parkhurst Forest once formed part of the extensive Royal Forest of Parkhurst which extended as far west as Porchfield and as far south as the edge of the Downs. There are extensive records of the management of the forest from the 12th century, although there was little or no management taking place.
Parkhurst forest is a good place to spot red squirrels and there is a viewing area, with a hide to see them.
